I would not use either sentence. I would say this: - The ship was attacked at sea . " At sea " is a fixed idiomatic expression.

  • I would not use either sentence.
  • I would say this: - The ship was attacked at sea .
  • " At sea " is a fixed idiomatic expression.
  • com/reference/dictionary/entry/sea If you say "at the sea", it sounds as if you mean "next to or near the sea".
  • Saying "on the sea" is basically what "at sea" means, but I doubt that any native speaker of English would ever actually say that instead of "at sea".

Indeed confusing, prepositions!

You could always try a google search for "attacked on the sea" and "attacked at the sea". The number of hits turns out to be very low. Try "attacked at sea" and you get 162.000 hits. Without dismissing your two sentences as wrong, I would say "at sea" is a safe option.

I'd like to know others' opinions on "on the sea" and "at the sea".

"Attacked ON the HIGH SEAS" seems to be very common.
