Pin up

Hi,

In the back of the shop, a boy with a pale, pointed face was standing on a footstool while a second witch pinned up his long black robes.

What does 'pin up his long black robes' mean? I don't suppose it really requires pins, does it?

Thanks in advance

Hi I presume that the boy is buying these robes and that they are too long. He is standing on the stool so that the witch can shorten the robes. The witch will pin up his robes - she will turn the robe up to the required length and then use pins to hold it in place.
