Pile of boxes stacked

Startled by the sound, I stumbled back/backward and crashed into a pile of boxes stacked behind me.

1) Are back and backward interchangeably here?

2) Do stumbled... and crashed imply that I fell into the boxes?

3) Is there anything contradictory about using pile and stacked together?
