As referenced in "Driving Miss Daisy". When I saw the film my frst thought was that no-one would call a supermarket "Piggly Wiggly" but my second thought

Apparently the first self-serve grocery store (shopping carts, open shelves), back in 1916. Before then, the model was "go to the store and ask the clerk to get what you wanted", which was much less efficient, as only one customer could be served at a time.
