Vocabulary

pieces of work / works

I'd like to learn the word "work" in this sentence from Oxford learners dictionary;

"The book is a detailed and thorough piece of work covering all aspects of the subject."

Is it possible to say "The book is a detailed and thorough work covering all aspects of the subject." ? And if so, are there any differences?

What about this pair? Do they mean the same?
I bought two pieces of work at the exhibition.
I bought two works at the exhibition.

Thank you.
