[pieces of jewelry/apparel] vs [jewelry/apparel items]

I have made up the sentences below.

(1a) He bought two expensive pieces of jewelry for his wife's birthday.

(1b) He bought two expensive jewelry items for his wife's birthday.

(2a) The company is spending millions of dollars promoting two pieces of high-end apparel.

(2b) The company is spending millions of dollars promoting two high-end apparel items.

Most of my non-native English speaking friends think both "pieces of" and "items" in these sentences can be used interchangeably. What is your opinion? Thank you very much.
