Please help me which is correct?

1. Write it down on a scrap of paper.

2. Write it down on a piece of paper.

You could also say "write it down on a piece of scrap paper" or "write it down on a piece of pink paper."

Please explain more . Why a scrap of paper is not but a piece of scrap of paper is OK?

I don't see #1 as wrong at all, it seems quite normal to me. Perhaps this is a case of AmE versus BrE?

It seems to me that 'scrap' and 'piece' mean the same thing.

There's nothing wrong with "write it down on a scrap of paper" in AmE, but it's not exactly the same as "a piece of paper." If you have a nice new sheet of paper in good condition, you would call it a "piece of paper." If you tear a corner off of a newspaper or an old envelope to write something down on, you would call it "a scrap of paper."
