PICKING UP AFTER MYSELF

hello friends,
could someone explain to me this expression?:

' I'm not the best person in the world about PICKING UP AFTER MYSELF and keeping a house clean and neat because I didn't never have to do any of that stuff.'

thanks in advance, Jo.

Hello Jo, If you pick up after yourself , you don't leave your things all over. You do NOT, for example, leave your dirty dishes on the table, your shoes in the living room, your coat on the chair, your newspaper all over the couch, etc. You keep the area clean and neat.
