Picking mushrooms

Dear native speakers!
Here is my sentence:
We decided to go the woods to pick mushrooms. There were a lot of us, each one of us had a basket, and we liked to be active. So, once we were in the woods, every one of us was busy picking (the) mushrooms.

I decided to omit the definite article before my 2nd mention of "mushrooms" because they are still not definite enough for me. It's still non-specific, "some". My third sentence, however, reads:
Once we got home, we cooked the mushrooms. Delicious!
(It's the mushrooms we picked, so the article seems appropriate)

Is this correct?
