Pick up the pieces

Hi,

I came across this sentence in an article:

"They had to pick up the pieces of what the first group did."

The first group messed something up, so the other guys who came in later had to fix it. The article had something to do with school projects.

Shouldn't it be 'after what the first group had done''?

Thank you

Hi You could use 'after' there. But the original version is good and is graphic. The first group broke things into pieces.

  • The first group broke things into pieces.
  • The second group had to pick up the pieces of the first group.
  • That does make sense and it is a good metaphor Dave
