Pick up a few pointers...

Cedric: So I swore Phipps to silence and decided
to stay on as your private secretary.

Ralph: Why? So you'd pick up
a few pointers
,(give a piece of advice?) just in case?

Cedric: I was determined to help you
do the job so well that just in case would never arise.
It's easier to whisper advice from cover
than risk its merit at the point of attack. To do it himself and risking to blow it?
I am sorry, Your Majesty, both for
my deception and my cowardice.

Ralph: I probably oughta be pissed,
but what the hell? I had nothin' else goin' (he had the spare time to do it anyway?)
and I didn't get shot or anything.

Top answer

it is not to give a piece of advice, it is to get bits of advice, information, ideas in the course of his duty, "just in case" like maybe "if things go wrong, or if things come to a crisis point, just in case" Cedric says he wants to help Ralph do his job so well that that crisis, or whatever it is, does not happen. It is better to advise earlier to avoid the crisis, than try and do it at the time of the crisis. I had nothin' else goin', you are close, but it is more closer to Ralph having nothing else happening or going on at that time.
