Pick up

When someone says they are picking up someone else's thoughts, the mean the following by "pick up", right?

(transitive) to receive (electrical signals, a radio signal, sounds, etc), as for transmission or amplification

Top answer

There are two possible interpretations to this: either the person literally believes that they can receive someone's thoughts through some method of transmission across space, or, less literally (and more plausibly), they can guess what another person is thinking by what they say, or their actions or behaviour, etc.
