Pick the best

Hello.
Please read:

As we understand the brain in greater detail, we are able to develop drugs that stimulate it. This has proven a life-saver for the millions of people with attention deficit disorder, and could be a tremendous breakthrough for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
It could also, however, be of great use to normal people. If a pill could improve your memory, focus and concentration – why not take it? This also leads to a slippery slope. You can imagine a workforce where it is the culture to take performance enhancers routinely, and your boss yelled at you if you didn’t do so as well.
This pressure to take pills for focus is already intense at the best schools. Spend time in the library at any top college, and you will overhear students talking about using pills like Adderall for better focus and attention.
159.The pills used for increasing focus are................... in certain schools.
aprescribed for students
b.limited to the library
c.illigally available
d.apparently considered

I picked a.The Key gives d.

Thanks in advance!

Hi, Of the 4, the best choice is D. The article does not actually say explicitly that students take these pills. And it doesn't say anything about them being prescribed.

The article does not actually say explicitly that students take these pills.
And it doesn't say anything about them being prescribed. Who do you think prescribes them?

The school staff.

Why D?

This is the definition of 'prescribe' by oxford dictionary:

Note sense 2.

This is from CALD:

Note that they are pressurizing students;Hence prescibing.

The school is not prescribing them. Only doctors can prescribe drugs. I'm sure the school does not require the students to take drugs, as the definition (or prescribe) that you refer to would suggest. That would be illegal.

But require that they take the pills as the question says, not drugs as you said.It says they pressurize the students.

Hi,

The thing with these passages is that the cultural context also has to be considered..

In my culture, only doctors can prescribe drugs. And no doctor would prescribe such drugs simply to improve school performances.

But it is also possible that school faculty put pressure on them.right?
