Hi again,
I've always thought of it as based on 'Pick it up from the top of the page', ie from the start.

On the radio, announcers sometimes say 'the next news will be at the top of the clock / at the top of the hour', meaning 'when the big hand points to the top of the (non-digital ) clock'.

In music, we refer to the beginning of the piece as the top, the head. DC - da capo.

If you see something a music score that says "DC al fine" it means "go back to the top and play to the end."
