Pick it or them up?

Hi. Let's say there is a bunch of pieces of paper strewn about a classroom and the teacher wants his or her students to pick them up. Could the teacher say, "Please pick it up" to mean the "paper" in general instead of "Please pick them up" to mean "pieces of the paper"? I hope my question is clear. Thank you in advance for your help.
