Pick away at the edges

Hi,

Let's say thay I have a worksheet full of maths problems and I need to solve them all. If I only solved two or three because I just wanted to get a rough idea of what to expect, could I say this?

"I've only picked away at the edges of the last worksheet so far."

Thank you.
