phrasing (pasive/active)

1. In the early stages after the human race became possessed of its ears, they would merely be helps in the struggle for existence.

2. In the early stages after the human race possessed its ears, they would merely be helps in the struggle for existence.

Q) I was wondering if the phrasing in #1 and #2 is the same regarding pasive and active voice in "became possessed of its ears" and "possessed its ears."
By the way, does #2 sound okay?

(2) sounds wrong to me. (1) sounds correct as far as "became possessed of" is concerned, though I do find this use of "helps" unusual.

Technically speaking human race does not have ears. Humans do, but human race is a descriptor of a group and it itself cannot have ears.
