Phrasing

What is wrong with 'thank you for that/this one' when said by a call center agent thanking the customer for an information. Is this phrase awkward? An english trainer in the call center said that it's awkward and should be changed to 'thank you' or 'thank you for that information'. anyone? native american/british?

I agree with your trainer that it's inappropriate, but I wouldn't call it awkward. It's casual and often personal. It would be an appropriate reply to an unsolicited compliment, even in a call center context.

It's casual and often personal. It would be an appropriate reply to an unsolicited compliment, even in a call center context. The caller says, "I love your accent." (reply) "Thank you for that." But I wouldn't use it for conducting the center's business.

What about 'that one' or 'this one'? shouldn't ONE be removed?

In my opinion, yes. I hear it as a "fixed expression" without the "one." - A.

I'm not sure I'm following you. The expression is, "Thank you for that." "This" also works. I haven't heard it with "this one" or "that one." The expression is relatively new - I'd guess It's appeared within the last five or ten years.

In situations unrelated to the "Thank you" expression, I notice that my Mexican friends often use the phrase "that one" where I would not.

I'm going through the same aggravation! My quickest way out is to exit my browser.

If you're speaking about "this one/that one" as a stand-alone expression, I'd use it when the jeweler opens the display case and asks, "Which ring do you like?" (reply, pointing) "That one."

I wouldn't use it in a phone conversation or a face-to-face conversation about ideas, except very rarely

Sorry, what I mean is 'how do I tell them that 'thank you for THAT/THIS ONE' should not be used?

what i mean is 'how do I explain to them that 'thank you for that/this one' is wrong? (Including the word 'one')'?
