Phrases with "digit"

I am trying to find out the correct format for phrases with the word "digit" in them. Is the correct form of the sentence "3-digit code", "three-digit code", "3 digit code" or "three digit code" as I have seen each of these used? Thank you for any help.

Hi JMello33 Welcome to the Forums. As you said, all versions are used, and all are fine by me. However, I would prefer the hyphenated expressions as the hyphen makes it easier for the reader to understand what is meant.

Thank you for responding. I guess as long as one form is used consistently then there really should not be a problem. Thanks again
