Phrases and a pronoun and a relative clause

n the sentences below, the sentences following the underlined comma and the underlined dash consist of only phrases or a phrase and a conditional clause respectively.

Each year thousands of books are published, many of them to attract momentary attention only to disappear gradually from the shelves and the minds of readers
