phraseal verb: give off

Is this correct? If so, I can't seem to find it in the dictionary. Do you know where I could find it?

You didn't seem excited about doing it. That's the image you gave off.

It's not quite right, in my opinion. I'd say (At least) that was/is the impression you gave us (or you gave off ). "image", I think, is misplaced there.

It's not quite right, in my opinion. I'd say

(At least) that was/is the impression you gave us (or you gave off ).

"image", I think, is misplaced there.

I agree with Ivanhr here.
"gave off" usually refers to something like a gas or odor.
"The rotting fish gave off a horrible smell."

If you google "that's the * you give off" then you will find that the phrase is used with:

- impression, energy, vibes

I agree that "image" does not work here. My feeling is that it can only be used informally or loosely and that it really only works with "vibes" (which is slang for vibrations) and, in some contexts, with "energy" ...
