Vocabulary

phrase meanign

What does this sentence mean
"he replaced the glass on the table with deliberation"?
I understand the words, but I think the clause "glass on the table" refers for a particular gesture.

Thanks

I would have to see the context in which the sentence was used; but taking a drink is often used as a means to gather one’s thoughts before replying to an important question. If the action is performed by someone who has had too many (alcoholic) drinks, it may be that the words indicate a level of difficulty in performing that seemingly simple task. Perhaps someone better read than I can suggest something more significant.

"glass on the table" is not a phrase: the phrasing is "He replaced the glass / on the table / with deliberation".

"He replaced the glass on the table" means that he put a glass (drinking vessel) back down on the table, having previously picked it up. "with deliberation" describes the way in which he did this.

The context was as an example of using the world 'deliberation'.

Thanks GPY. I should have added that 'deliberation' is usually intended to communicate thinking and carefulness.

Oh, good. I thought maybe it meant that it used to be a glass-topped table, but now it is a deliberation-topped table.

(Edited to add: don't worry, Anonymous -- I'm just joking.)
