Phrase "getting a way with someone/something (US english)"

Hi guys,

could you please explain the difference between the following two groups of lines to me?

1)

- Should a county sheriff get a way with playing lawyer and over riding a judge's court order?

- Some people can get a way with just wearing a retainer to straighten their teeth.

versus

2)

- My best advice is find a babysitter and get a way with him.

- Quarles, probably just let some emotions get a way with him and took some criticism too personally.

Please what's the base difference between getting a way with something / someone?

Could you please clear this up to me?

thanks a lot in advance
