Are both 'paper is' and 'paper are' correct in this sentence?

Most of our guidebooks' paper is recycled.
Most of our guidebooks' papers are recycled.

1. Our guidebooks are printed mostly on recycled paper. The second sentence is then unlikely to work, since materials used in printing are referred to as ‘paper’.
2. Upon expiry of our guidebooks, most of the paper is recycled.
Again, the second sentence doesn’t work with ‘papers’
