Phrase: "As the day grew"

Hi

Could you please tell me which verbs work here naturally?

As the day deepened, he despaired more and more of her coming back.
As the day rose, he despaired more and more of her coming back.
As the day brightened, he despaired more and more of her coming back.
As the day grew brighter, he despaired more and more of her coming back.

Thanks,

Tom

Are you just speaking of dawn? That seems a short time for increasing despair.

Hi, MM.

Let's say if 8 am turns into 12 noon or 2 pm -- which verb would perfectly fit here?

As the day ______________ and he didn't return, I realized that he had lied to me.

Thanks,

Tom

I am grateful, MM -- and one last question.

Do these work too?

As the night/day went on, he realized that he had been lied to.
As the day rolled on, boredom swarmed on him.
As the night darkened, the fear was back again.
As the day brightened, hope sprang back to him.

The first is OK but rather mundane.
The second one seems odd to me, since it suggests that the day was busy while he was bored.
The the last two express weather changes rather than time passing.

Hi

It took me considerable time to 'uproot' this thread -- the discussion was very vague in my mind and I couldn't think of any key word to put in the search bar. At any rate, I came out smelling of roses.

I bumped into this phrase recently. How about this?
