Phrase analysis

Hi.

1) A timid person, he was frightened by every little thing.

2) Being a timid person, he was frightened by every little thing.

3) Because of being a timid person, he was frightened by every little thing.

4) Because he was a timid person, every little thing frightened him.

What's the form and function of the underlined parts? Is it always possible for such constructions to get shortened to just a noun phrase (like the one in #1)?
