Phrase analysis

Severalfriends were present—Saurabh, Arun, and Smija, among them.

How does the underlined phrase function?

Should it not be '... and Smija were among them'

Thanks

I would omit the comma: Several friends were present — Saurabh, Arun, and Smija among them. I suggest that 'Saurabh, Arun, and Smija among them' may be a verbless clause. In any case, it is a common structure as it stands.
