Hi there, I don't want to start an argument, but I would understand the statement a bit differently. I would understand it as saying that somebody who had been lying down, got back to his feet.

Alternatively, it could mean that somebody went to fetch people to help him in a potentially dangerous dispute. Although in this context I imagine "backup" would be one word.

I would not use it to describe recovery from an illness, unless the person had literally been bedridden and unable to get out of bed.
