In everyday UK English, it would probably mean that you have shifted down a gear in your car (or when on your bike) and are therefore going more slowly
However, I believe it has a meaning in computer games. If you drop your gear (throw away your weapons and your possessions) before you are captured, then you may be able to go back and retrieve them at a later time
