'The book' is a phrase correct? If i said the book, then what about the book, the book is big?, small?...

'The book' is a noun phrase, and it has a clear frame of reference: it is referring to a specific book in context. 'The big red book' is another noun phrase, and 'inside the big red book' is a prepositonal phrase. I think you have wandered away from the meaning by using 'clear frame of reference', Ali-- it seems inappropriate to me. What is your intent in saying that?

In the simplest way, a phrase refers to a group of words which does not have a VERB.

for example:

a sick old woman
big tree with long branches

a phrase is a part of a sentence.

I helped a sick old woman.
