Phrasal Verbs > Don't pass that information on...

Hello,

In case I don't want that a secret will be passed on what do I say?


- Don't LET ON about this. It must remain a secret.


- Don't LET OFF about this. It must remain a secret.

From what I've learned both is OK but is there a difference?

A politer way of saying ****! Suggest you look up that word rather than me trying to teach it.

So in regard to passing on secrets you never say don't let off.

Don't let off has rather to do with an unwanted smell or noise.

Any idea why my English book says both can be used?

It may be talking about the phrase rather than the use.

Without knowing and reading the book myself I can't really start to guess.
