00One of my prof. was using the term verb phrase to refer to both main verb+object, adv, complements and verb + its particle. I've never thought about phrasal verb till I come in here. That 's the source of my confusion. I think it's clear now. Thanks again.0-

I do agree with you with regards to the first explanation.

But, I think, the second one is different from your views. In my opinion, the words phrasal verb defines the words combining a verb and preposition like cut off, put forth, write down, pull up, etc.,

I think we probably need also to consider the difference between these two:

1. A phrasal verb, where the combination of verb and preposition or adverb have reached a degree of association - their frequent use in tandem has come to mean that they act as an independent verb (a semantic unit):

He cut off the head of the chicken.
