phrasal verb as a noun

He seemed a bit put out at not having been invited.

I know, put out is a phrasal verb. Then I wonder why here it has been used as a "noun". If you say it is a verb, could you justify your point?

Why a noun? If you said adjective or something like that, I could understand you, but a noun doesn't seem logical. Anyway, put out is a verb here, in the passive voice I'd say.

Why a noun? If you said adjective or something like that, I could understand you, but a noun doesn't seem logical.
