phrasal verb

Hi,

I think a phrasal verb is a verb that has a verb and a preposition like 'take on' as in 'take on the task on hand'. Then how can we distinguish what comes after a verb is a preposition or an adverb? I think I saw some procedural steps that were used to determine which one but I was confused rather than informed when I looked at that. Do you have some clear tests (if we can call them that) to determine that?
