As far as I know we use "of" when the owner is lifeless thing. For example "the main idea of the document".

And when the owner is alive we shold use " 's". Like "it is John's book".

I'd use "of" if the pictures were all showing J. Smith, and " 's " if the gallery was made by J. Smith.

Will it be correct if I write Photo gallery by John Smith ??? Yes, fine. You might write Photo-gallery with a hyphen, although I like it as it is. If it's a title, I'd capitalize Gallery.
