Phonetics vs Phonology

I wanna know the difference between Phonology and Phonetics.

"Phonology: the branch of linguistics dealing with the way speech sounds behave in particular languages or in languages generally. It examines patterns of sounds.

Phonetics: the study of speech sounds. Phonetics deals with the physical nature of speech sounds, and not with their relations to other speech sounds in particular languages."

These are from Merriam-Webster online dictionary:

phonology: the science of speech sounds including especially the history and theory of sound changes in a language or in two or more related languages.

phonetics: 1 : the system of speech sounds of a language or group of languages. 2 a : the study and systematic classification of the sounds made in spoken utterance b : the practical application of this science to language study.

Though I don't have independent knowledge in using these two terms, there seems to be some degree of difference. Phonology appears to have a broader scope, including history, theory, and comparative language studies.

hello this's victor who is korean^^ even i had the same question... and i searched for the information....

in conclusion the phonetics has someting to do with vocal sounds ..... like through our speech organ like a lip or a tongue and so on . it deals with how these sounds are articulated and perceived
......but the phonology has someting to do with sounds in language "how abstract sound categories are manipulated in the processing of language "
