Perhaps you mean 'phonology': the study of the sound system of a given language and the analysis and classification of its phonemes.

Phonology is the study of language sound systems, and phonetics has more to do with how the sounds are produced and represented, I think.

Phonetics and Phonology are two very closely related aspects of spoken linguistics, and the distinction comes from the level of abstraction to which you wish to refer. I studied linguistics for three years, and even after that the distinction between phonology and phonetics is a little difficult to understand! I will do my best
