Hi,

My dictionary describes 'phonetics' as a plural noun, usually treated as singular.

In this case, what sounds best to me is What are the phonetics for the word? I see it as a request for the phonetic symbols.

I do agree with Clive here. If I had to fill the blank space, I'd use "are" as well.
