PhD statement of motivation

Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing to apply to your MA/PhD in Economics program. With the expanding world economic crisis, my career ambition is to become an economic researcher in development economics.
I heard about CERGE-EI (Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education – Economics Institute) while I was searching for scholarship on internet. I tried to overview about CERGE-EI using its website and found it pretty good institution where I can develop my future career path. CERGE-EI’s mission and its commitment to achieve its objective highly impressed me to be the fruit of this institution. As I am from poor country, there are enormous economic problems unsolved that needs high level of economics education, economics research experience and knowledge. In this case CERGE-EI is the best place to provide these ingredients of development that made me to apply.
I am determined person who is focused on achieving my career goals. My life has been challenging as my mother passed away and my father remarried and left me just when I was in secondary school. As I am first son for my family all responsibility previously bestowed on my mother and father diverted to me. Despite these unfortunate circumstances, I have helped my siblings to continue and complete their education up to university level and find job. Being in this circumstances I proceed to pursue degree in economics and maters in development economics. My life and education thus contributed to my interest of studying economics and hope CERGE-EI would further enhance my ambition.
My research interest is in development economics. I would like to contribute to the understanding of underdevelopment (poverty) and its solutions. Questions like what characterizes poverty, how poverty is related to economic, politics, social, and environmental factors need due and careful analysis. To this questions I would like to work on what policy options at different world structure can be pursued to end this social evils so that human beings benefit from economic development.
During undergraduate program I tried to see the role of small microfinance institutions to the livelihood of the poor in which I observed how financial institutions are helpful in reducing poverty by creating job opportunity and earnings. In that minor analysis I come to understand expansions of poverty reduction oriented institutions could be financial, social, political, economic are very important. Not only expansions of the institution but also careful selection of the participants of institution is important as most of the time non-poor have more endurance than the poor to appropriate the benefits to their own selves. Moreover I believe it takes me time and higher level of education and experience to have clear picture of poverty and institution interrelationship.
During post graduate (maters) I used to conduct my thesis on the relationship between poverty and deforestation where I learned how poor are dependent on environmental resources and how they are also contributors to deforestation. In this research exercise I came up with other questions which asks me higher level of understanding of relationship between farmers and environment.
Currently I am doing research on impact of agricultural cooperatives on rural poverty as principal investigator, and on technical efficiency of hospitals as co-investigator. Throughout the process of the research I have been closely observing once again how poverty (farmers) are related to institution (cooperative). Personal, I gained a lot from these research experience in terms of doing research and also expect policy recommendation of the research will be helpful for policy makers. These research experience are very helpful in building my career. In relation to this social and poverty reduction is one of the research priority areas of CERGE-EI.
Being public worker as budgeting, planning, monitoring and evaluation expert in the regional bureau of water, mineral and energy, I got opportunity to observe the life that rural people of Ethiopia are leading. Frankly speaking their life is precarious. Their problem is not single and short term problem rather multidimensional and dynamic problems. This even initiated me to be in academic institution so that I can closely do research on this problems. In addition to this my observation during master’s thesis writing I used to observe how the percapita expenditure of the rural people to see its relationship to the deforestation. In that case on average percapita expenditure of the households are very low. Again they are quit dependent on the environment. I used to consider empirical findings and books that portraits underdevelopment of poor countries, in this case I usually get surprised that poverty is as the property of these poor countries, and wondering why this situation is so chronic and taking decades and sometimes century to change. Thus, practical problems of poverty, food insecurity, inequalities, environmental degradation which are hindering development of the world development in general, and least developed countries (LDCs) in particular; empirical and theoretical gaps in soughing solution for this issues had triggered me to be part of the solution in one way or in another way. I want to contribute my part to level of my knowledge, experience and skills. In this case my work experience in teachings and research further made me zealous to respond to these issues as much as my knowledge allows me. Apart my motivation and interest I found CERGE-EI would further expand my knowledge and experience particularly in research area that would help me contribute my side to the development of the world and also to the academia.
To contribute to the development, knowledge, research experience, skills, are very crucial. These crucial ingredients are most of the time produced in academic sectors. Currently, there is also general understanding of human capital as engine of economic growth. These human capital are characterized as easily expandable (high spillover effects) and related to increasing to returns to scale which incredibly contributes to the productivity of human beings. These human capital would be multiplied by teaching, training, research, and demonstration. In this case the role of academic sector either in government or private is incomparable. Thus, I would like to be in this sector, and I hope CERGE-EI contribution to my ambition is vital.
