Can you help me improve my motivation letter please?
Dear Selection Committee Members, I am writing to aplly for the Doctoral Program of Challenging Monopolies, Building Global Empires in the Early Modern Period – a Comparative Project under the supervision of Dr. Cátia Antunes. I believe by having this PhD position I can deliver an essential addition to the project and improve my professional (archive) skills in this research area at the same time. Being graduated from Leiden University (ENCOMPASS program) in 2009 and having an internship in Nationaal Archief Den Haag during the program has provided me with extensive archive skills and basic knowledge of composing historical writing. In this period of meticulous learning, History of the European Expansion on the first year and Archiefkunde on the second year, I also got infected and transformed into an archive-bug and amused by the fact that a lot of people still do not understand the richness (of information) that left in this big pile of records. To some extent, this wholesome practicality has actualized a new way of thinking through historical narratives for me. To feed my archival desire, I finished a register that compares the content of Political Reports (Politieke Verslagen) in Tapanuli (North Sumatra) and Maluku during the colonial period at the end of the program, as a complementing and compulsory data for my thesis on the subject of how the government of the colony accessed the knowledge from local society and utilized it for further action. Later on, I conducted background research on archive collection, determining the classification of an archive (based on previous research), arrange the archive collection based on its original order and provenance, making the archive description, admitting the description to archive database, produce an archive inventory or finding aid for archive users, and write articles about the archive collection. These skills are substantial and extensively demonstrated in my carrier path as an Archivist in National Archive of Republic of Indonesia in Jakarta. During two years after my return to Jakarta in a unit called arrangement and description, we produced an archive inventory from Mijnwezen collection or archive collection from Department of Mining which previously considered as a tough collection for ANRI’s archivists to be accessed because of these skills inadequacies. The experience of intensive learning and its typical academic atmosphere in Leiden University in the past have left a big impression for me, my intellectual behavior in particular. The subject appeals to me both on historical grounds and my background as a citizen of Indonesia. Therefore, by joining this program I have some eagerness to provide a mutual understanding, sharing my knowledge that certainly essential to this program, for which I am confident I have the competence and skills. Thank you for considering my application, and I look forward to your acceptance.
Sincerely yours, Julinta Hutagalung
