PhD Cover Letter

Could you please review and comment on this cover letter.

Your covering letter should detail your reasons for applying and why you are the ideal person to fill the post.

I graduated from Thomas Edison State College with BSBA Accounting (honours) and Strayer University with MS Accounting honours) in 2007 and 2009 respectively. My performances in both institutions are not the main reason for applying to this PhD in accounting program in your institution. The reason for applying for this program is imbedded in a simple dream I had as a sixteen year old boy. That is, to learn to read, write and own my own story book (prior to this time in my life I never had a story book because my parent could not afford one)!

My dream to learn how to read and write started and two years ago in - . Born to an illiterate mother (who did not have the opportunity to formal education) and semi educated father who completed a technical school. My father was a present yet absent kind of father. Because of lack of attention from father and the poor public school system I could not read nor write until I was sixteen years of age an illiterate to say the least! I felt empty and wanted to read like other children and own my own story book so I could read like the other children in my vicinity. I eventually befriended a boy who I knew could read and write and asked him to help me achieve my dream. That is, to learn to read and write. Over the period of time, this friend of mine taught how to read. My affinity for the written word grew stronger as the weeks grew into months. I took extra tutorial classes to help me write my late entrance examination which I passed and went to secondary school the following year. Due to determination and hard work, I managed to pass Ordinary Level Examination in four years (instead of five years). I went on to do my GCE Advanced Level Examination. Due to performance, I was employed by my school to teach. This I did for a short period of time. Due to financial constraint my parent could afford to pay my tuition so I was forced to take a full time teaching employment. During my teaching, I enrolled with Association of Certified Chartered Accountant (ACCA). After five years of teaching and studying, I enrolled at Financial Training Company (FTC) to continue with the ACCA (Part Qualified). In 2003, I relocated to the where I obtain my Bachelor of and Master degrees.

In addition to my educational performance and simple dream to learn to read and to write, I have been greatly influenced by many my teachers who saw my natural predilection to teach and they encouraged me to reach out to that goal. Whiles I was in sixth form, this potential was recognised and I was employed soon after completing advance levels examinations to teach ordinary level students. The same happened while studying for my masters’ degree. I my intention for studying masters in accounting degree was to get enough credit in accounting which will help me prepare for my Certified Public Accountants (CPA) examination. My lectures yet again recognised my abilities and drive to teach and I was advised me if I could consider PhD and also to tutor undergraduate students in the same college. Since I was working full time, studying full time and taken care of my sick mother at the time (my mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and passed ), I turned down the offer to tutor.

The above enumerated are my motivation for applying for this PhD program. That is, to become a teacher and researcher which satisfy will satisfy my childhood dream quest to learn and to write and now, passion to pass on knowledge – to teach.

The reason why I think I am the ideal candidate for this studentship is, that throughout my carrier, I have demonstrated that have passion for humanity and desire to teach others. My work with children – teaching, my work with charitable organisations – about seventy percentage of my adult working life has been dedicated to helping people. Examples include my work with Africa and Caribbean Evangelical Alliance (organising black churches in England to influence change in U.K), Latin Link (a missionary organisation organising youth in Europe to make impact Latin America through sharing the gospel and providing humanitarian aid) and People for People, Inc. (providing training to welfare recipients and helping them find permanent work, helping to raise money to help HIV AIDS people in Africa and providing mentorship children of prisoners).

I apply for this studentship with the hope that you will consider my personal advancement, determination to succeed and willingness to contribute to humanity. I am also confident that my background and personal journey will not only help enhance the diversity of your institution but would contribute to enhancement of your university’s standing. With a simple dream to just learn to read and to write and two years ago. Here I am today applying to this great university of yours to give me the opportunity not only to learn to read and to write but to teach others to do the same.
