Letter Writing

PhD application letter

Hello, I have written an application letter and was hoping that someone could give me some advice on how to improve it. As I have been working in the industry I can't show any research, therefore I tried to write around it.

University's webpage gives these conditions:
    Working experience from relevant engineering and construction industry is an advantage;
    Personal suitability;
    Good teamwork skills;
    Academic background and results;
    Previous research and development work.

Whould I also include a paragraph on my hobbies?

____________

Dear Prof. Smith:
I am writing to you to apply for PhD position in Reinforced Concrete Structures. Having received my Master degree from London Technical University in 2014, I worked in an engineering company as a supervisor of road and bridge construction. My work also involved inspections bridges and during this time I became interested in assessment of concrete structures.

Several of my courses as well as my Bachelor thesis involved bridge design projects which were done using finite-element software and to further my knowledge in structural mechanics I participated in spaghetti bridge design contests. During Master studies I gained experience with non-destructive testing methods e.g. modal and ultrasound testing. At the same time I took a course in structural optimization which thought me model validation and different optimization techniques. While working on my Master thesis I learned Python programming language, because thesis required calculations with large amount of data. I have successfully applied these skills in my workplace and am sure that they will help me to pursue a PhD. Also my participation in Erasmus exchange programme – where I finished my Master thesis in University of Paris, France – will allow me to move to a foreign country more easily.

My workplace’s main clients were government and local agencies and projects occasionally involved various construction companies. As that required me to work alone or in small groups, I am used to collaboration with many different people to achieve a common goal. Also by combining part-time job with three semesters in Bachelor and my Master studies. I learned effective time management.

In Germany and many other countries assessment of concrete structures is still done using analytical calculations, instead of FE models. Therefore I am enthusiastic to further knowledge of concrete modelling using FEM.  I intend to write a PhD thesis related to probabilistic assessment and time dependant simulations of reinforced concrete structures. As Department of Civil Engineering researches remaining structure service life and corrosion of reinforcement I would like to do my PhD research, for which I am confident I have the skills, knowledge and competence, here.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to your positive response.

Sincerely,
Tom Cruise

Thank you for your time, teechr. I change my letter based on your advice.

Can someone clarify a couple of things? First, should I write "masters" or "master's" degree? Because word shows "masters" degree as a mistake. Previously I wrote "...University of Paris, France". I included the country of university as it is a small university in a small country (all of the names are fake). Should
