pet vs petted

I have always thought that the correct way to say I pet the cat today and I pet the cat yesterday was correct, that pet, like 1 fish , 2 fish was the same..I pet the cat today and I pet the cat yesterday, but I have been told that petted is actually a word?! when did this become correct?

Hi, Standard English has always been 'petted'. I think the past tense 'pet' is a relatively recent feature of American English. I've never heard of 'fish' used as a past tense.
