You are the Occupational Health and Safety Coordinator at your store. You and your Health and Safety Committee members have noticed a number of problem areas during one of your periodic inspections. In particular, you noticed that food and beverage spills in the cafeteria line are not being mopped up quickly. As a result, there have been several minor accidents lately and you are afraid there will be a serious accident if safety standards are not improved. You have the task of writing to the restaurant manager about safety standards. You are willing to show films, give talks and discuss any difficulties there might be with unsafe design or improper, or worn, floor coverings. You are more interested in solving a problem rather than in fixing blame. You will want to emphasize, amongst other things, lost customer goodwill due to accidents, the personal pain and suffering resulting from accidents, potential legal implications and similar safety related concerns. You know that you cannot do the job alone. You need the active support of the restaurant manager. It is, therefore, important that you persuade rather than demand, as simply "requiring" that something be done does not ensure it will be done, or done well. In other words, you want your colleague to actively assist you. You do not want him or her to take the approach that "if you want to lower the number of accidents - don't let me stop you".
