Is it correct to use persons in plural instead of people, for example, there were a lot of persons in the show.

No grammatical rule says you can't use persons. It just isn't used that way. I think I have mostly seen it in lifts with a numeral: "Four persons only."

It's grammatically correct, but not idiomatic when there are lots of people. persons is usually used only for very small numbers of persons -- maybe less than 10, but even then you can use people.
