Personification of objects

Hi,

I am sometimes confused on how much is allowed or how a literary technique called 'personification' should be used. Sometimes I cannot see any clear distinction.

I think I have used this phrase or a similar one before to pose a question:

the road walked (on) by many of his ancestors

Here, I think a response has been made indicating that road cannot walk.

Fine. That seems reasonable to be assumed of the phrase; then, how about this what seems to be a valid case?

The branches of the tree twisted and turned in response to a severe wind coming from above.

How much is allowed or how should it be used? I have a hard time seeing the difference for the two above. Detailed answers will be appreciated.

I don't see any similarity between the sentences. In the first one, people are walking, so there is no personification of the road. In the second, the branches are moving, and the personification comes from the 'in response' part as it suggests that the branches are deliberately reacting to the wind, rather than just being blown around by it (which is really happening).
