Personal statement. Hope somebody can help me to improve my english
Personal statement.
I have always found anything to do with medicine is fascinating from a very young age. Then, I started to discovered the importance of nutrition in critical care when I took care of my late father who was terminally ill due to end-stage leukemia. At this stage where medical therapy is compromised, good nutritional status will delay the progression of disease. Hence, I started to experience with various nutritional support that is available in the hospital. When my father died, the concern on nutrition does not only stop there. I continue my degree in dietetics.
My curiosity about obesity and weight management arose during my internship. I observed that most of my patients were obese. Furthermore, I found that obesity is a difficult case to handle. Follow-up often confirms no progress for the majority of patients. According to the Malaysian National Health and Morbidity Survey in 2006 about 38% of youngsters aged between 12 and 18 are classified as overweight. Being a dietitian in my hometown, where fast food is easily accessible and available, obesity is a complex mechanism that I need to understand with further study.
During my final year, I managed to do an interesting project . It was a dissertation entitled, What Triggers Eating Among Male and Female Students of the XXX university. I found from the data, that both genders gave the highest scores from a range of choices, for external triggers and lowest scores for physiological triggers. Obesity and being overweight has become of national concern, so much so, that it occupies a great deal of editorial space, and has government attention for reduction. A newspaper article, The Star, April 11, 2010, highlighted that obesity among Malaysian adults increased by a staggering 250% over a 10-year period from 1996.
I also got to know more about the Malaysian Association of Obesity organisation (MASO) because one of the principle board members happened to be my supervisor.
I learned that the only way to become a good dietitian was by critically assessing the worth of the research upon which our clinical practice is based. Ever since then, I have had a strong interest in nutrition course and I feel strongly that the University of Glasgow is the ideal place for me to continue to grow and develop my knowledge. I find that I am highly motivated when put into an environment where I am able to learn from different approaches. I am very passionate about the opportunity to join a post-graduate programme at a university which has such a wide range and depth of expertise in healthcare related disciplines.
I hope that this Statement will be warmly regarded by the University and that I shall soon be able to secure a place, and use the learning I acquire to develop interventions for the betterment of Malaysians; and acknowledge the expertise I gained from the University of Glasgow. My name means happiness and I hope to bring happiness to my family with helping them be successful in nutrition care.
