Personal Statement for Grad School

I am applying to grad school for Occupational Therapy. I would like someone to review my essay and let me know how I can improve or enhance it. Thanks.

Just over five years ago, I began working for a large insurance company in an entry-level customer service position. The first few months were great, and I pictured myself possibly making a career in that company; however, the more that I worked there, the more I realized that I really was not helping people in the way they I thought I should. At that moment, I realized that it was time to return to school and change my career. I started at Gwinnett Technical College in the Early Childhood Education program, which I continued until after I entered Mercer University. I knew I was on the right track in the education field, but I realized that I wanted to be able to work with people on an individual basis, something I would not be able to do in a classroom.
As a junior at Mercer, I began researching graduate degree programs and came across the Occupational Therapy program through the gacollege411.org website, which suggested this career as an option for me because of my skills, abilities, and personality. At that point, I did not know much about Occupational Therapy. I then began reading information about Occupational Therapy online and watching videos on YouTube about Occupational Therapy. The more I learned about Occupational Therapy, the more interest I developed in this career. The ability to work one on one with patients and the versatility that Occupational Therapy has to work in many different settings and with different groups of people is what appealed to me the most.
My education and professional background has demonstrated that I can be successful in the classroom and in the workplace. I have consistently made exceptional grades in school by making sure I managed my time well and submitted all of my assignments before the due date. Although I do not have many years of professional experience, the positions I have held have taught me how to work with others within an organization. I have had mainly customer service experience which will benefit me when working with patients, employers, co-workers, and families. Many organizations have also taken advantage of my ability to read, write, and fluently speak Spanish in order to better serve the ever-growing Hispanic community.
Once I begin the Occupational Therapy program, my immediate goal is to learn all the techniques and practices in order to carry out procedures and assist patients to the best of my ability. I plan to successfully complete the Occupational Therapy Program and find a job as an occupational therapist working in either the school system or a healthcare facility in the future. I also hope that I can make an impact in the Hispanic-community by helping the members in need improve their quality of life.
So, why select me for the Occupational Program at Brenau University? Creativity, problem-solving, caring, and empathy are qualities that a good Occupational Therapist should possess; I truly believe I have all of these qualities and the motivation that is required of this amazing program. Brenau University, which is in my community, can give me the opportunity to showcase my skills and work with people to improve their quality of life by helping them accomplish their daily tasks. To me, there is nothing more rewarding than to see my patients improve and knowing that I have made a difference in their lives.
