Personal Statement

I am applying for a grad program and I am wring a personal statement for it. In personal statement, how can I say that The research area of Dr. X overlaps with my interest, more formal? I think this version is a little bit pretentious. Can you please help me? By the way, a committee will read this document, not Dr. X.

How about this? I am very interested in some parts of Dr X's current research, and I hope to have the opportunity to learn more about this.
