Higher education is of great importance nowadays and it is now that I am a senior at High School that choosing what to study has become one of my top priorities.


Throughout my short life, I have thought about the future in very different ways but with one aim in common: to have post-secondary studies. When I was little I wanted to become a Chemical Engineer, just like my father. I took Chemistry during my Freshmen and Sophomore years and liked the subject but did not saw it as a potential field of study. When I grew older I was almost sure that I was going to study to become a pilot, I even looked for colleges in Peru and the USA to study Aeronautical Science, being one of my first choices Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.


I have always had certain interest for the Natural Sciences, such as Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, and it was recently in 2007 that I went on an exchange program to Illinois and got involved with the American System of Education. I attended a school and took a class called Biotechnology. With my classmates I attended a Genetics conference which caught my interest because of the variety of applications this science has. Yet I have not thought of studying Genetics or Molecular Biology, even though I think it would be a very interesting major. What I found more enriching from my trip to Illinois is that it helped me get acquainted with the American Educational System and that it helped me improve my English.


After a long period of uncertainty I made up my mind and decided to study Economics with specialization in Business, Finance, or International Business. I decided to study Economics because I have always been interested in knowing more about markets, such as the stock market, and also because I regard this field as one of the most important elements of this globalized world we live in now.


I mainly want to attend a university in the United States because of its exceptional academic background being ranked as the country in which the best universities of the world are located. Another reason for my interest in studying in the USA is the variety of cultures that are present in the universities’ campuses. Not in every region of the world will I find so many people from other countries interacting with each other. I think it would be a good chance to get to know people from all over the world and at the same time to learn more about their culture and customs.


Regarding the university itself, I would like to attend the best university I can get into. In addition, it has to accredited, outstand in the field I have chosen to study; it has to provide a supportive environment in which to learn. Besides that, I do not have any other preference or programs I would like to participate in.
